LOCK TERMINOLOGY
Pin Tumbler Cylinders/Locks
These come in various forms of locks, including deadbolt, key-in-knob,
lever, padlocks and the original Yale rim cylinder. The common
denominator is that they all have a pin tumbler cylinder or housing.
When a pin tumbler lock is installed on a door you can usually only see
the lock’s plug or face of its cylinder. You can quickly identify a pin
tumbler lock by looking into its keyway where you will see a wavy
keyway and one or more pin tumblers hanging down.
Disc Tumbler Cylinders/Locks
This cylinder is normally held onto metal type doors by means of a
spring clip or retainer nut at the rear. They are normally found on
vending machines, filing cabinets, desks or metal boxes etc and can be
identified by having a straight slot as a keyway.
Radial Cylinders/Locks
Like the Disc Tumbler lock, this cylinder is normally held onto metal type
doors by means of a spring clip or nut at the rear. They are normally
found on vending machines, filing cabinets, desks or metal boxes etc.
This lock is easily identified by its circular keyway.
Lever Rim Locks
Can be found on all types of doors and drawers. Mostly used to secure
medicine cabinets, lockers, office drawers, cabinets etc. These locks
are normally secured by two bolted nuts.
Bullet Warded Locks 2/3 Lever
Can be surface or mortice mounted. At one time this lock was used on
most doors but is now most commonly found on sheds and outhouses.
Sash Lock
Mortice mounted lock consisting of a latch bolt and a key operated bolt.
The handle spindle and keyhole are normally in the upright position but
can also be in the horizontal position.
Dead Bolts/Locks
A lock in which the bolt is fixed in the locked position by a key or device.
When locked the key or device must be used to open the lock. This lock
comes in many forms. For example, a deadlocking night latch, a
deadlocking mortice lock.
PADLOCKS
Scandinavian
A U-shaped shackle sliding into a plain body usually of brass or bronze
and having no visible means of assembly. The keyhole is normally at
the opposite end of the shackle.
Old English
Having a traditional shaped body with a hinged shackle and normally a
sliding brass keyhole cover. Lock consisits of a case and cap riveted
together.
Spring Shackle Padlock
May have a hinged or sliding shackle which will spring open when the
key is operated. Can be snaped shut without the use of the key.
Closed Shackle
Having a minimum amount of visible shackle when locked reducing the
possibility of forcing open.
Tumbler Padlock
A lock of combination type that require selected numbers aligned in
order to open the lock body.
